An earthquake was felt in many parts of the southwest Icelandic region today. It triggered a seismic burst under Kleifarvatn lake. The burst, by contrast, appears to be receding.

This is what Bjarki Kaldalón Friðriksson, a natural hazard specialist at the Icelandic Met Office, says to mbl.is.

The earthquake was detected at 10.02 am and was 3.3 in magnitude. It occurred under Kleifarvatn lake, at a depth of 6 km.

About 50 earthquakes have been recorded

The earthquake was felt well in the capital area, at least in Árbær, Breiðholt, and the city center. It was followed by several aftershocks.

Friðriksson says that about 50 earthquakes have been detected at Kleifarvatn lake after the big earthquake hit. The most recent ones were smaller than 1 in magnitude.

However, the seismic activity in the area seems to be decreasing now.
