Activity in the southern crater – the lava barely moving

The activity in the eruption at the Sundhnúkagígar crater row seems to be similar to last night but the crater walls have grown, as in the Geldingadalur and Mt Fagradalsfjall eruptions. Activity is in the southern crater but no activity is visible north of it. The fissure is about three kilometers long.

This is according to Bjarki Kaldalón Friis, a natural hazard specialist at the Icelandic Met Office.

Drones flew over the area around 21 to 22 last night and there had been no movement of the lava flowing to the west toward the Njarðvík pipeline. The lava flow had not changed much since yesterday morning. Last night the lava tongue seemed to have stopped about 180 m away from the pipeline.

The lava tongue that flows south was about 350 to 450 meters from Suðurstrandarvegur road. The movement was very small then and Friis says he doubts that the lava has moved much since about nine last night.

There is no seismic activity in the magma channel, which is common when a volcanic eruption has started.
