3.4 earthquake in Katla
An earthquake of magnitude 3.4 hit Katla in the southeast-central region of Iceland at the fifth hour this morning.
The last earthquake of this magnitude occurred in Katla on August 29 last year, measuring 3.3.
Earthquakes of this magnitude are not uncommon in Mýrdalsjökull, according to Sigríður Kristjánsdóttir, a natural hazard specialist at the Icelandic Met Office.
40 earthquakes in the magma channel
About 40 earthquakes have been detected since midnight in the magma channel at Svartsengi on the Reykjaness peninsula.
The activity is very similar to yesterday, according to Kristjánsdóttir, and all the earthquakes were small.
