Hjalti Jóhannes Guðmundsson, the Director of Operations and Care of the capital area says he doesn’t know that the night’s rain caused any runoff problems, but the city’s road crews went out at 4 am to check the conditions on drains and see if the water had not been easily accessible.

“It seems like it went better than expected. The rainfall last night seems to have been considerably less than the first forecasts,” Guðmundsson tells us.
He says that as recently as yesterday morning, work had begun to clean up key areas in the city and in the places known to be vulnerable when there is a major runoff.
“We started to sort out the drains early yesterday morning and those efforts have helped and been helpful. It would have flowed more if it hadn’t.”

Not a long time between alerts

Today at 11 am a new yellow weather warning will take effect in the capital area until midnight. Southwesterly winds are forecast to be 13-18 meters per second with snow showers, drifting snow, low visibility, and deteriorating driving conditions.
“We’re starting to prepare for the afternoon. We’re ready and we’ll try to make sure the main road system runs and then we’ll go into the residential streets when possible.”
