Damage in Grindavík has increased

Damage to property in the eastern part of Grindavík has increased greatly according to the chairman of the Grindavík City Council, Hjálmar Hallgrímsson.
A new depression was created alongside the volcanic eruption which began on January 14 and the fault has caused further damage than before.
Sinking houses got more damaged
Hallgrímsson says that the industrial area in the east part of town is badly damaged by the depression. Residential housing in this part of town are also in worse shape.
“Houses were swaying and sinking and got more damaged.”

Houses much in much worse shape
On November 10, a depression was formed in Grindavík and it caused considerable damage in the town and especially in the eastern part of the town.
Hallgrímsson says that the damage has increased dramatically in the wake of the new depression.
“It just got a lot worse and there’s just a lot of damage there. The houses are not exactly ruined but the ground has gone down, they’re all crooked and damaged. Tarmac is peeling up and there are some cracks under the houses and more of that sort,” he says, adding:
“The damage was so great that the houses are far worse off than they were after the first event.”

Going to her home fastened to a lifeline
Rakel Lilja Halldórsdóttir had to go into her home yesterday fastened to a life line.
Her home is on Austurvegur in Grindavík lies over the big fissure that opened in town on November 10.
During the last volcanic eruption, the fissure got even bigger and when she visited the town today to collect her things, she could see that the damage was enormous.
