“The Faroese Red Cross contacted us and expressed their interest in helping the residents of Grindavík. They suggested to start their collection and we welcomed it,” Oddur Freyr Þorsteinsson told mbl.is.

He says that the Faroese think a lot of the residents of Grindavík and that they were struck when they saw the pictures from the town.

“We are glad to receive this support from our friends in the Faroe Islands. It’s wonderful to find this support.”

Seldom seen as much enthusiasm

He says he expects the money raised in the Faroe Islands to go into the fundraising initiative launched by the Icelandic Red Cross on Sunday and go directly to the residents of Grindavík.

“We started our collection on Sunday night and it’s been an amazing success. We’ve rarely seen such strong reception at our collection and we’re really pleased how well the people are with the Grindvíkers,” says Þorsteinsson.

In the past week, the Faroese have raised funds to respond to the catastrophe in Grindavík.

Now the Faroese Red Cross is announcing that it will send DKK 250 thousand to Iceland for the disaster.

The Faroese National Council has also decided that it will give the same amount.

Half a million Danish kronas

Together, the Faroese will donate half a million Danish kroner, or ISK 10, to support their cousins in Grindavík.

The Icelandic Broadcasting Service (Kringvarpið) reports this and says that Icelanders thank the Faroese for their support.

“Our Faroese friends are always ready to help,” commented Jón Brynjar Birgisson of the Icelandic Red Cross.
