Grindavík without electricity
Electricity went off Grindavík at 03.30 this morning when the main cable underneath the lava field following last weekend’s volcanic eruption gave way. This is stated in a notice from HS Veitur.
Machine malfunctioned
“Preparation began immediately to restore power with Landsnet backup power generators and electricity was restored to parts of the town within two hours,” the announcement states.
Another Landsnet reserve-power machine malfunctioned and therefore there is not electricity in the whole town.
“Two backup power engines were installed and connected in Grindavík but one of them failed when running. Because of this, there is no electricity in all towns but work is being done to restore as much electricity as one engine can tolerate. Work is continuing with Landsnet to lay an air line over the lava field as a backup route and it is expected that the line will be ready later today.”
