The city of Reykjavík will provide winter services overnight, but heavy snowfall is expected in the capital area, with worsening driving conditions and limited transportation. The weather also affects garbage collection, and people are encouraged to shovel snow from bins to ensure that garbage collection can be done.

The weather forecast predicts disruption in service until after Thursday.

“The winter service is ready and the contractors will start cleaning streets and work through the night and all day to do the job on all available vehicles. Further information will be available in the morning and residents can send tips to the tips-webpage,” the Reykjavik City Council announced.

People asked to make garbage collection easier

Employees at the waste management office are prepared for a bad road conditions, but people are still asked to shovel snow away from the garbage bins so they can be emptied. Where this has not been done, the garbage bins might not be emptied.

People are encouraged to shovel snow from bins, sand and salt walkways trails and make sure that doors and bins are not frozen solid.

The waste management office will be working in Breiðholt, Árbær and Grafarholt tomorrow. The announcement states that it is important to consider the working conditions of the waste management staff in snow and slippery conditions.
