The operation of getting hot water into Grindavík has been successful in the western part of town, according to Úlfar Lúðvíksson, the police chief in Suðurnes, but work began last night and lasted through the night, he said.
“Water has been allowed in the west part of the town, which is the largest residential area in the town. The work today is to try to restore water to the east part of the town as well as electricity,” he tells us. Last night, electricity was restored to the western part of Grindavík.
The town is very badly damaged
Lúðvíksson says that the town is very badly damaged after the events of the last days, but many new fissures opened up in the town and older fissures were further damaged.
“The town was badly damaged by this eruption, which began on Sunday, and many new fissures have opened up. Now, work is underway to map the fissure area and restore power and heat to the whole town. The town is not open for others than first responders and those who are working on rescuing valuables. It looks like the eruption is dying down, but then uncertainty takes over in this area,” he concludes.
