Magma likely under Grindavík town

mbl.is

It appears that magma is running under Grindavík town, according to information from the Icelandic Met Office.

All responding parties have therefore been asked to leave the town. You can also see leave the town on mbl.is’ web-camera.

Yesterday the residents of Grindavík had been ordered to evacuate the town, following a large earthquake north of Grindavík.

The seismic activity is closer to town than it was before the volcanic eruption on December 18.

The depth of the earthquakes is difficult to determine, according to a natural hazard expert at the Icelandic Met Office.

The epicenter of the earthquakes is south of Hagafell and very close to Grindavík. In the volcanic eruption on December 18, the earthquakes were north of Hagafell and therefore farther away from the town.

The earthquakes were all detected on the magma dike that was created on November 10.
