Two cars collided on the highway by Svínafellsjökull glacier in south Iceland near Skaftafellsá this morning around 10 am. Eight people were injured, two of them seriously. Two helicopters from the Icelandic Coast Guard were called to the scene.

“This is a serious collision. There are emergency responders right here from Höfn to Vík,” he says, referring to rescue teams, police, ambulances and other emergency responders.

Six people are traveling by helicopters of the Icelandic Coast Guard to the National Hospital in Reykjavik.

They were injured when two cars collided on the highway close to the road to Skaftafell earlier today.

Two people were announced dead at the scene.  Both of them were foreign tourists.

The roads are slippery in the area

The highway was closed after the accident but later a bypass route was opened as can be seen below.

The helicopters landed at the Landspítali National University Hospital in Fossvogur at about 1 pm. Three injured people were on board each helicopter. It took the helicopters around one hour to fly from the scene to Reykjavík.
