Work has started gathering material for the construction of a defence wall north of Grindavík. The work on the wall will begin at the eastern end, but the defence wall as a whole is supposed to be two kilometers long. The first section is expected to take about three weeks to build.

Ari Guðmundsson, engineer at Verkís, says that the developers have been given the green light earlier that work could begin on the gardens.

“We started working with bulldozers there today,” Guðmundsson said yesterday. He explains that the wall will be 2 km long and about “half a height of the final wall”, i.e. about 4 meters in height on average, but the height varies depending on location.

“This follows the flow routes we have obtained from our lava- simulation,” he says. When asked, he answers that the work has started at the eastern end of the wall, where the risk is considered to be greatest.

The wall is similar to the other wall at Svartsengi, but the work on that wall has not yet been completed.

“There are a number of additional projects. There are still some openings where roads pass through. It takes some weeks to work on the design and closure,” he says.

“But with regard to the Grindavík wall, we’re looking at this phase taking maybe three weeks,” the engineer added in conclusion.
