A construction crane fell from a truck in a lane leading to Hringbraut in Reykjavík, shortly after 14:00 yesterday. A witness says the crane almost fell onto a manned vehicle.
In a conversation with mbl.is, Gudbrandur Sigursson, deputy-director of the traffic department of the Icelandic police in the capital area, stated that traffic was closed during the operations of the response parties.
He says that luckily, no casualties were reported during the incident. A light pole is damaged and traffic was blocked to the west due to the crane and large stones that also fell onto the road.
Could have been a disaster
Media journalist Kristinn Hrafnsson was the second driver to be involved in the accident and snapped pictures of the scene. He says that the woman in the car before him was almost hit by the crane.
“She would not have survived, the crane was so heavy that it took a light pole and folded it like paper,” he says, adding that the crane also fell from quite a height.
