Úlfar Lúðvíksson, the police chief in Suðurnes, advises townspeople not to stay in Grindavík, given the landrise at Svartsengi and the increased likelihood of a volcanic eruption. The police will not however ban people from staying in the town.

“The residents of Grindavík  have the right to stay in the town as they have this Christmas but it is the police chief’s advice that they do not stay in the town, even if he does not block their stay,” Lúðvíksson says.

30 houses were occupied on Friday

He says that residents of Grindavík are at their own risk in Grindavík and that the rules regarding their access to town will not be changed at this time.

On Friday, about 30 people were staying in Grindavík, according to Lúðvíksson. When asked, he said he does not know how many people will stay in the town over the New Year.

“I don’t have a feeling for that myself. I think that it must reduce the interest in staying in town under these circumstances.”
