Now it is possible to nominate an individual, an institution or organizations for the Vigdís Finnbogadóttir’s Prize for Women’s Empowerment The award was founded in Reykjavík last May on the eve of the Council of Europe summit. This is posted on the website of the Government of Iceland .

The award is sponsored by the Government of Iceland and the Council of Europe and the idea is to recognize individuals, institutions og organizations that excel in promoting or supporting women’s empowerment. This could include a number of things like enhancing women’s social participation, promoting gender equality, drawing attention to the unequal status of women and showing best practices in encouraging improvements in this field.

“The award is named after former president of Iceland, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, the first woman elected as a Head of State. The prize money is 60,000 euros, and the award ceremony will take place for the first time in June next year in Strasbourg, France,” says in an announcement from the Government of Iceland.

The nominations must be written in either English or French and they must be signed by at least five people.
