The speed of the land rise is great
Land is now approaching its previous position at the GPS monitor in Svartsengi before land began rising in late October. Land has risen by 23 centimeters in eighteen days, but in recent days land has risen by one centimeter per day.
Yesterday, November 30, the country was about three centimeters short of reaching its position of October 25. Then the earthquake swarm began in the Reykjanes peninsula.
The latest dot is the green one, from yesterday, November 30 and it shows the measured land rise. Around 3 cm are missing until land has risen to the height it was on October 25. Chart/Icelandic Met Office
About 35 centimeters decrease since November 10
In the wake of the first earthquakes, the land rise was fast, but not at the same rate as it has done since the 10th of November. The earthquake measured more than ten centimeters in sixteen days.
A large landslide occurred following the magma movement from Svartsengi eastwards under Grindavík road and into the Sundhnúkar crater row. Then the land decreased 35 centimeters. After the 12th of November, the land began to rise again, at a rate twice as fast as before.
Researchers believe that magma is now flowing back up the area, most likely in a rather demarcated area northwest of Mt. Þorbjörn.
