Roughly eighty delegates are going from Iceland to the United Arab Emirates to discuss climate issues at the UN COP28.

The conference began yesterday and 84 participants from Iceland are registered to the conference or participate in related events.

The group consists of ministers, MPs and delegates, representatives of the City of Reykjavík, social organizations and eighteen climate-related companies.

It should be noted that registration is open for COP28 during the meeting so that a number of Icelandic representatives can make changes.

This is stated in the written response of the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change to a question from mbl.is.

Fourteen in an official delegation

Twelve members of the Icelandic delegation are on the official delegation. Six of them are from the Ministry, two from the Environment Agency of Iceland, and one from the National Association of Youth.

Five representatives attend the meetings every day, but most of the delegation only participates in part of the conference. In addition, experts from the Energy Authority and the Icelandic Met Office attend the meeting.

Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir and Minister of the Environment, Energy and Climate Affairs Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson will also take part in the conference. Jakobsdóttir will attend a summit meeting at the beginning of the conference and Þórðarson will take part in meetings and events at the conference, as well as bilateral meetings with states and international organisations.

Over 0,02% of the Icelandic population

The Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Affairs will pay for the participation of the Ministry’s representatives in the delegation, as well as sponsoring the participation of young representatives.

A total of 84 delegates from Iceland will attend the conference. It can be stated that this is more than 0.02% of the Icelandic population. If other nations sent a similar percentage of delegates, for example, about 1,150 would be from Norway and about 71,190 from the United States.
