Björk and Rosalia encourage people to protest tomorrow
Singers Björk Gudmundsdottir and Rosalia encourage people to protest at Austurvöllur on Saturday, in an announcement sent to the media from Björk.
“I want to give a song that Rosalia and I sang together. The proceeds will go to fight against sea-food farming in Iceland. The song will be released in October,” Björk’s announcement reads.
Seven organizations are organizing the protest at Austurvöllur on Saturday, which are: Young environmentalists, Nature Conservation Association of Iceland, Landvernd the Icelandic Environment Association, The National Association of Angling associations, The North Atlantic Salmon Fund (NASF), The Icelandic Wildlife Fund and VÁ-Association about preserving the fjords.
Iceland has the largest untouched area in Europe
“The people of Seyðisfjörður protested that their fjord would probably be subjected to this. They are in a lawsuit about this and we would like to help with the costs. This could be a precedent for all fjords in the world.
Iceland has the largest untouched area in Europe. Here in summer sheep have been free in the mountains, birds have flown over them and fish have been swimming unchecked in rivers, lakes and fjords,” says Björk.
“So when Icelandic and Norwegian businessmen started setting up fish farms in the majority of our fjords, it was a shock to the nation and has been a factor in the situation this summer, we don’t understand how they got away with doing this for a decade without any regulation or legal framework,” Björk added in the announcement.
