The whaling season has ended. The whaling vessels Hvalur 8 and Hvalur 9 have arrived in  with three fin whales. A total of 24 fin whales have been caught during the season.

This is what Kristján Loftsson, CEO of Hvalur hf., tells us on mbl.is.

It was thought yesterday that it would be possible for the whale boats to go fishing tomorrow, but it is now clear that this trip will not be possible.

38 whales caught in September

As many people remember, Minister of Food Svandís Svavarsdóttir decided to put a temporary whaling ban in place this summer. On the other hand, in August she decided to allow whaling again, with various restrictions.

The season has therefore been shorter than usual, with only 24 days of fishing. A total of 148 fin whales were caught during the year, while 38 fin whales were caught only in September.

The weather has been rough this month, and Loftsson says that this has made it difficult to get to the fishing grounds as often and as late as last year.
