When artist Curver Thoroddsen arrived at his sound installation in Hamraborg’s carport in Kópavogur yesterday, he noticed that the wires of the speakers that played a crucial role in the performance “Fucking noise" had been cut.

The exhibition is part of the Hamraborg Festival, which runs until tomorrow.

This year, the festival’s theme is punk, with the sound installation, which Cuver planned to honor the Icelandic punk scene by setting up eight loudspeakers who each played a reprise of an Icelandic punk song. The show takes place in the Hamraborg garage, “where the punks used to hang out in the old days,” Curver said.

Wondering why this had been done

"I came in yesterday in order to shut the job down and the wires had been cut," says Curver, who drew a blank when he saw that damage had been done to the sound installation.

"Then speculation began about whether it had been an annoyed neighbor or maybe someone who hated punk music," Curver adds.

Curver, though, quickly received a reply to his speculation, but today he received the information that there had been an unfortunate misunderstanding.

The message had not reached the caretaker.

“The man who cut the wires was calling me, but he’s the manager of the premises in Hamraborg,” Curver says. “It wasn’t done in bad at all, but the message about the festival clearly didn’t reach the manager who had no information on why it was there and therefore cut the wires.”

Curver says he was glad that there were only communication failures, but he says the show is already back in business.

The cradle of the Icelandic punk scene can be visited

"It was simpler to fix than it seemed at the outset. I had to connect the wires that had been cut back together, but it was a simple creation of small wires, so it was simple to fix," Curver says.

“Punk is thriving in Hamraborg,” Curver concludes, “but the performance of “Fucking noise” will be open in Hamburg until ten o’clock tomorrow night. Then, visitors and others get a chance to hear old songs in Kópavogur, which is according to Curver the cradle of the punk scene in Iceland.”
