The employees of Rarik in Skagafjörður have a knack for finding things, although not all of them are connected to electricity, but according to the Northwest Heritage custodian, they are particularly apt at finding cemeteries.

This is reported by the heritage custodian, Guðmundur Stefán Sigurðsson, in a conversation with the regional website Feykir, which yesterday reported on a human bones find by the Rarik-men at the town of Hóll in Sæmundarhlíð.

A skull was discovered

“Just before noon we got an announcement about the Rarik men were coming to put in an electrical landline to the farm, and while they were working they found bones that seemed strange and they were not sure what they were. They kept going, and then a skull of a man was discovered, so there was no doubt in their mind that this needed further investigation,” says Sigurðsson as it is reported in Feykir.

The announcement further states that at least two tombs have been identified, mentioning that sources have stated that there were two prayer houses on this land but no mention is of a cemetery. According to Sigurðsson, such houses were not authorized to bury people.

Stealing the thunder from the scientists

He says that certain results indicate that the tombs might date back to before the and he praises the men working for Rarik for their knack for finding important heritage remains.  “In fact, they have had an outstanding success here in Skagafjörður to find cemeteries. This is the third cemetery they have found in the county, I believe. They are basically stealing the thunder from archaeologists and leaving them in the dust, in spite of them racing to find archaeological finds, whereas the Rarik staff seem to find them with no effort.”
