The Icelandic Transport Authority is asking travellers on the road to use caution in traffic during the next few days. The biggest travelling weekend in Icelandd is ahead, and heavy traffic is expected in the country, mostly on the roads, but also air traffic.

The Icelandic Transport Authority’s announcement is that staff will be on duty this weekend, sharing information and advice about traffic in the media. In addition, employees will be responsible for the observation and monitoring of aviation as they have been in the past few years, but it should be noted that these issues have usually been very good, modelled on Icelandic operators and licensees.

Heavy Traffic to the Westman Islands

The Icelandic Transport Authority encourages those who travel by private car this weekend to take their time as the journey may take longer due to heavy traffic. A trip to Landeyjarhöfn port for the Westman Islands from the capital area can take two hours if conditions are good.

The Icelandic Transport Authority asks passers-by to rest their phones and other distractions. “Let us not exceed the maximum authorized speed, which is actually determined solely by the best possible conditions. Those who need to move more slowly should make driving easy and safe to overtake,” the notice says.

It also states that driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or other drugs is one of the three most common causes of fatal traffic accidents, along with speeding and the misuse of seat belts. Every individual driver can eliminate that danger and it is vitally important that seat belts are used in all cars on the road.

“Be assured that no alcohol or other intoxicating drugs are in your blood before you get behind the wheel.”

Operating licences required for passenger transport

The notice states that to fly or sail passengers for payment requires an operating licence or passenger licence, but there are specific requirements for the holder of such licenses, including in terms of safety and service. In terms of passenger navigation, the Icelandic Coast Guard has maritime surveillance.

On the other hand, private pilots and recreational craft owners may be accompanied by their friends and acquaintances within the limits of the rules applicable to them. Expenses may be shared with other passengers and may be used as fuel, provided that one part of the cost is covered by the person on the trip.

Otherwise, the Directorate of Transportation wishes the country’s people a happy weekend, a happy memory and a safe return.
