Access to the eruption site will continue to be closed today. This is done to ensure the safety of tourists and first responders. The area is heavily polluted, especially due to the bushfires.

A notice from the Commissioner in Suðurnes states that the Commissioner of Police is unfortunately unable to guarantee the safety of those entering the area in these circumstances.

Smoke covering the walking path

It is windy by the eruption site today and wind direction is not in our favour. Smoke from bush fires and volcanic eruptions is crossing a hiking trail leading to the eruption.

The measurements of pollution in the eruption site are being improved, but this work is not finished. The site continues to be repaired.

The sheriff's decision to close the facility will be reviewed at a first responders meeting at 9 AM tomorrow morning.
