Due to bad weather conditions, wind that might cause toxic gases to blow over the hiking route, the eruption site will be closed today and tomorrow.

Heavy pollution in the area

"The Police Commissioner of Suðurnes District has decided to close the Meradalaleið trail, as well as other hiking trails leading up to the site of the eruption. This decision has been made to ensure the safety of travelers and emergency responders. There is heavy pollution in the area currently, due to wildfires in particular. Unfortunately, the Police Commissioner cannot guarantee the safety of those who enter the area under these conditions. Many have venture into the defined high-risk areas and thereby ignore the orders of the emergency responders.

Conditions will be windy today and tomorrow at the eruption site and the wind direction is not favorable for hikers.

This closure comes into effect immediately and the Police Commissioner’s decision will be reviewed after a meeting of the emergency responders at 9:00 on Saturday, July 15th.

Please note that all hiking trails leading to the eruption site will be closed."
