Architectural enthusiasts in Iceland should not have to travel far to see one of the world’s most beautiful churches, as according to Architectural Digest magazine, one of these is in Stykkishólmur.

Last Tuesday the magazine published a list of the ten most beautiful churches in the world, including the church in Stykkishólmur. The list includes St. George’s Chapel in Ethiopia, Panagia Paraportiani Church in Greece and Borgund Stave Church in Norway.

According to Architectural Digest, the world’s most beautiful churches have three main features: they provide comfort, serenity, and a safe place to worship.

The magazine reasoned that “the sophisticated lines of Stykkishólmur Church are easily visible from a distance as they stretch to meet the heavens and are anomalous visions”.

Stykkishólmur Church in Snæfellsnes, drawn by architect Jón Haraldsson, was dedicated in 1990.
