Construction on the ring road in Kjalarnes has been ongoing for about three years. The first phase of the project will open next month. The overall project concerns widening the ring road from Kollafjörður to Hvalfjörður road, with the first phase extending from Kollafjörður to Grundarhverfi. It is not yet clear when the second phase will be launched. This is stated in the Icelandic Road Administration’s response to mbl.is query.

The first phase of the project is, according to the Icelandic Road Administration, a success despite a number of complexities that have arisen. It proved difficult to acquire building material  due to covid and due to the high level of industry in the area, complexity was created when a number of pipelines were discovered. The opening of the road is consequently one year behind schedule, as the original plan was to complete in 2022.

The first section that opens in early June focused on widening the ring road to  a double lane road each direction, from Varmhólar by Kollafjörður and most of the way to Grundarhverfi, with a roundabout at Móa, an underpasses at Varmhólar and Saltvík as well as side roads, along with horse riding paths and paths for pedestrians and cyclists. There will likely be some finishing touches and work on side roads after the road opens in June, although those projects will be completed this summer.

The second phase of the project has yet to be tendered, although it is clear that the second phase concerns the widening of the loop road to 2+1 road from Vallá to Hvalfjörður road with two roundabouts. One at Brautarholtsvegur and one at Hvalfjörður road. The second is also to extend the subway under Vallá, to install new subways at Esjaskáli and Arnarhamar as well as the extension of a concrete viaduct over Blikadalsá river, along with side roads and paths.

The complete work is a collaboration between the Icelandic Road Administration, Reykjavík City, Veitur and Opentender Iceland.
