Rescue teams in Húnavatnsýsla and Skagafjörður were called out tonight for a tourist who fell down a steep hill at Hvítserkur Cliff , between Hvammstangi and Blönduós .

The tourist had intended to walk from a viewing platform with a good view of Hvítserkur Cliff, down a steep, rough slope into the beach, when he tripped and fell some way down into the pebbly beach, the report said.

During the fall, he was quite seriously injured, but he was conscious when rescue workers arrived.

The man was taken on a gurney to the ambulance.

Moved to Reykjavík

It became apparent that it would be quite a feat getting the man up the hill in the stretcher so it was decided to take him down to the beach. A rescue truck drove towards the scene.

The man was successfully put into a gurney and taken to the rescue vehicle, which then moved him on to an ambulance waiting up the road.

Subsequently, the man is to be taken south to Reykjavík for treatment.

Operations at the accident site were completed by 19:30 this evening.
