Magnús Aron Magnússon was sentenced to 16 years in prison for intentional homicide in the Reykjavík District Court today. He is convicted of having killed Gylfi Bergmann Heimisson in Barðavogur in June of last year.

He was also ordered to pay compensation of over thirty million ISK to his father, siblings and children. The highest individual compensation was awarded to a child of over 10 million ISK.

Arnþrúður Þórarinsdóttir, the prosecutor in the case, says that the sentence was in line with what the office had expected. “This was what the prosecutor set out to achieve, both in terms of what offence is involved, intentional homicide,  and also regarding the length of the sentence,” Þórarinsdóttir says.

Magnússon denied the charges in the case, but the defense asked that he be sentenced only for assault resulting in death.

Heimisson died from a cerebral hemorrhage, as well as facial injuries that compromised breathing. Doctors who reported the attack said it was among the most violent in attacks they had seen without the use of a tool.

During the main proceedings, court-appointed psychiatrists outlined their assessment of Magnússon, who was assessed as culpable. However, psychiatrists said that there was a strong suspicion that Magnússon was autistic or that he possibly developed a personality disorder due to violence and neglect in his youth.

At the trial, the court was asked whether the punishment would be effective because Magnússon had to deal with these possible disorders. The psychiatrists agreed that Magnússon’s behavior had improved during his time in prison.
