It is now possible to walk behind Seljalandsfoss by Eyjafjöll again, but this is a very popular tourist attraction in this area. This route usually closes in the autumn because when temperatures go beneath freezing, a large chunk of ice is produced, where a spray of water from the high waterfall overflows the area.
From the ground, south of the waterfall, there is an iron staircase that needed repairs because of usage. In the last days new steps have been put in the staircase and it being repaired for the summer. The workers replacing the steps and working there have been subject to the water splashing over them from the waterfall and they have had to change their wet clothes sometimes twice a day.
Usually it has been possible to walk from one end of the waterfall to the other end and go down to the ground from there. Now this circular route has been closed because of because of falling rocks in the cliff at this location. So people have to turn back and go the same way back, which puts a great deal of stress on the structures that are out there.
“For people to be able to get around the waterfall is important. Now we just need to find some design there in a safe place so that it will be possible,” says Þorsteinn Jónsson, contractor at Steinasteinn in Hvolsvöllur. He has been overseeing this task, as in several other environmental improvements at tourist destinations in this area. The projects in question are being carried out for Seljalandsfoss ehf., but the owners are farmers in the area and the municipality Rangárþing East.
