The Salvation Army in Reykjavík celebrates the arrival of summer and is offering festivities today, the first day of summer, between 13-16 at their  new facility at Suðurlandsbraut 72 in Reykjavík.

The summer festival is meant for everyone and all kinds of entertainment will be available such as jumping castle, face painting, playground, basketball court, table tennis, to name just a few.

Heiða Björk Ingvarsdóttir, a staff member at the Salvation Army, says the festival has been in this format for the past three years.

“There used to be summer meetings at our old location, but now we celebrate the summer arrival with the whole family and it’s been very well attended over the last few years and there’s been a lot of life and fun. At least 750 hot dogs went out last year.”

This winter, the work of the Salvation Army has increased significantly, and there have never been more clients seeking help. The Salvation Army has had open houses where marginalized groups dealing with drug problems, or poverty as well as refugees have been able to get meals free of charge. All proceeds from the sale of food and drink today are donated to the Salvation Army Welfare Fund to help to continue that important work.
