Fun at sea fishing tournament despite small catch

“The fishing was not really up to par. The person who got the most catch got only 42 kilos. This hasn’t happened in about 15 years,” says Guðrún María Jóhannsdóttir, chairperson of the Akureyri Seafishing Association, but still in good spirits as Morgunblaðið asks about the annual seafishing competition, which took place on the 10th of April.

The competition was held earlier than has been the norm, she explains. “The fish that comes in here just wasn’t there yet. We’ve been trying to change the timing to increase participation and now we tried the Easter weekend.”

Jóhannsdóttir says the weather has been good and there has been great joy among participants and other attendees. Kári Marteinsson beat the men’s league with 42 kilos and Sóldís María Sigfúsdóttir the women’s league with 37 kilos.
