The police should be strengthened by an increase of 70 police officers in the coming years. In order to achieve this goal the idea is to increase police training and graduates twice per year than is done currently. This is among the announcements made at a meeting of the Minister of Justice, the National Police Commissioner, the Reykjavík Chief of Police, as well as the State Prosecutor and the District Prosecutor.

This is in addition to a 10 job posts increase at the beginning of the year  in the field of investigating and prosecuting for sexual crimes.

By comparison, there are about 700 police officers in the country today, and this increase therefore represents an increase of about 11.4% in total.

Minister of Justice, Jón Gunnarsson, also announced at the meeting that police would get more equipment, including protective equipment.

According to the presentation of the meeting, the staff increase is expected to be divided into the following positions:

  • About 30 police officers nationwide
  • About 10 specialists in a variety of police work, including civil defense and community policing
  • About 10 border guards
  • About 20 posts to tackle organised crime
  • About 10 posts in the investigation and prosecution of sexual assault (these posts were added at the beginning of the year)
