The Metropolitan Fire Brigade was called out yesterday, after a vehicle ended up in the water near Skerjafjörður.

No one was in the car when the fire department arrived at the scene but divers and the fire department tried to get the car to land but the car was about ten feet from the shore.

Speaking to mbl.is, Inspector of the Capital Region Fire Brigade Bjarni Ingimarsson says that the fire brigade received some indications that the car entered the water by the fjord early this morning.

It is not known how the car hit the water, but Ingimarsson says it is difficult to get a car across the rock garden by the sea, especially in the low water, but the wall is several metres high.

The driver of the vehicle was later discovered and Ásmundur Rúnar Gylfason, a deputy chief of the Metropolitan Police, said that the driver was getting cold and had been walking to Nauthólsvík shortly after the incident. When asked, he says the driver was slightly injured.

Have yet to interview the driver

“The police were notified of a person who was cold, and took that person to the emergency room and at the time didn’t connect him specifically to this car,” Gylfason says.
“It isn’t until a pedestrian who’s there walking and sees the car in the water and reports it that we connect it to the individual the police had previously intervened in and driven to the emergency room.”

Nothing is currently known about the circumstances of the incident. The driver is yet to be interviewed and a better description of the incident is yet to be given.
