Searching for a young man by the shore in Þykkvabær
The South Iceland Police began a search at about 17:00 yesterday for a man in his twenties after being contacted by his family in Árnessýsla. Rescue teams were called out to assist in the search at about 19:20 and at about 22:00, rescue teams found the man’s vehicle abandoned close to the in Þykkvabær.
The search was conducted with a drone, people walking and a tracking dog in a relatively large area around the car and the area between Þjórsá river and Hólsá river into the country and the beaches on both sides of that area. A Coast Guard helicopter assisted in the search, but the helicopter was turned away due to a malfunction. The search was stopped at about 02:00 AM last night, the South Iceland Police reports.
Started again at daybreak
The search resumed at daybreak this morning and the aim is to search the beaches from Þorlákshöfn east along the South Coast at least to the Markafljót river, but also the area between Þjórsárver and Hólsárver up to the towns of Þykkvabær will be searched separately.
The conditions for searching are good because the ground is frozen, so the rescue teams can use four-wheelers, cars or buggy cars. Large areas have been searched and will be searched today with the rescue teams’ drones, police said.
