Emergency plan set in motion
The emergency shelters in Reykjavík will all be open tomorrow, Friday. An emergency plan was put forth in regard to homeless people due to the extreme cold forecast tomorrow. This is from an announcement from city officials.
Assess the situation on a daily basis
According to the emergency plan, the shelters are open around the clock when the weather conditions are such that individuals are prone to hypothermia or serious accidents, but in recent days there has been a significant frost in the capital area and indeed the whole country. During the night and tomorrow, there is also a forecast of even more frost and then again at the end of the weekend. The announcement noted that the situation will be assessed day by day because of the cold.
The emergency shelters are three, two for men, at Grandagarður and on Lindargata, and one for women, Konukot in Eskihlíð.
According to the announcement, the emergency plan is based on the cooperation of all the first responders in Reykjavík, the emergency department of Landspítali hospital, the Metropolitan Police, the Red Cross, campsite officials, the Reykjavík City Council’s field and advisory team (VoR team) and emergency resources for the homeless.
