The 35th Euopean Film Awards will be presented at Harpa Concerthall in Reykjavík today. Some 700 guests from 43 countries have announced their arrival and in addition, about 100 journalists and 10 other agents will attend.

1,800 overnight stays are booked in connection with the event, which is watched throughout Europe. The staff of Harpa makes sure that everything goes ahead, with 75 employees from the Film Academy coming to Iceland.

Actress Penélope Cruz will attend the festival in Harpa, which is nominated as best actress for Parallel Mothers. British actor Kenneth Branagh, nominated for best screenplay for BELFAST, and Swedish director Ruben Östlund, nominated for best European film, best director and best screenplay for Triangle of Sadness.

Triangle of Sadness by Rubin Östlund was a hit in Reykjavík and is nominated for as the best European film as well as for the best screenplay.

This is the 35th time the film awards are held and on this occasion it was decided for the first time to present nominations by video. The production was done in collaboration between the European Film Academy and the Icelandic Film Office. Icelandic director Arnar Helgi Atlondres was hired to direct the video, with Iceland playing a big role alongside music by composer Atli Örvarsson. People from the Icelandic film industry were brought in to publicise the nominations, including Baltasar Kormák, Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir and Benedikt Erlingsson.
