The walking paths to the eruption site at Meradalir is closed today due to weather. This is confirmed by Kristín Jónsdóttir a specialist in natural disasters at the Met Office, but the information is also to be found on safetravel.is .

This decision was made by the police says Jónsdóttir, but adds that the bad weather and certain dangers because of it is the reason.

With the wind coming from the southeast with rain, the emissions from the volcano go northwest over Reykjanesbær, Sandgerði and Garður. When the wind direction shifted to south the emissions will head towards Vogar and Faxaflói.

The crater is getting bigger

The crater that has been forming is getting bigger by the day. Otherwise, there is not a big change since yesterday and the lava is still flowing from the crater but it has not spilled over the edge of Meradalir.

Yesterday new data was introduced that demonstrated that the volume of the lava was receding. Jónsdóttir points out that it is very difficult to measure lava volume, because there are a lot of factors to consider. Therefore, there is no certainty and it is not advised to draw strong conclusions from such data at the outset, anyway.
