"A rare and an Amazing Sight"

Ólafur Þór Víðisson a guide in Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon witnessed a huge piece of the Breiðamerkur glacier break off the other day. He says it is a rare occurrence and all the more exciting because of it.

"This is a rare and an amazing sight," he told mbl.is and luckily he had his camera ready and filmed it. The tourist season has already started in the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon with boating trips on the lagoon. Ólafur adds that visitors really enjoy seeing something so spectacular on their trips. "It really makes the trip even more exciting," he says.

"This is a proceses in nature, which ultimately is due to climate change. Probably 250 to 300 metres fall into the lagoon every year and the glacier moves forward 50 meters."
