The number of people who have died of COVID-19 in Iceland has passed 100, mbl.is reports. A total of 101 COVID-19-related deaths have been reported to the chief epidemiologist. Of those, 64 occurred this year. Most of the fatalities, or 64, have been among people aged 70 or older. The number of infections is down, and at present, 48 COVID-19 patients are at Landspítali National University Hospital, two of them in intensive care.

The latest updates on covid.is show that since the first case of the disease was confirmed in Iceland February 28, 2020, a total of 181,830 cases have been confirmed, representing 48.3 percent of the nation.

According to the chief epidemiologist, the virus has lately been affecting sensitive groups, such as the elderly, people with underlying conditions, or those taking immunosuppressants.

“Most of the fatalities have been among individuals with underlying risk factors, although that is not always the case. Therefore, it is at times unclear whether a death can be attributed a COVID-19 infection,” he writes.

A total of 4,011 people in Iceland have been infected with COVID-19 more than once, six of them three times and the rest twice.

About 80 percent of the nation have been fully vaccinated against the disease, and 70 percent of adults have received a booster shot.
