The first baby born in Iceland in 2022 was in a major hurry. She was not expected until January 14, but decided she couldn’t wait that long.

Her parents, Elfa Sif Kristjánsdóttir and Ásgeir Frímannsson, live in Ólafsfjörður, North Iceland. They were attending the birthday party of Elfa’s father in Siglufjörður, a nearby town, when Elfa’s water suddenly broke around 10 pm on New Year’s Eve.

“[A] few minutes later, we were in an ambulance,” Ásgeir tells mbl.is . The drive to Akureyri Hospital is more than an hour and goes through the towns Ólafsfjörður and Dalvík.

“We were very fortunate. The midwife was in Dalvík, so we just stopped there to pick her up,” Ásgeir continues.

Once they approached the farm Kálfsskinn on Árskógsströnd, a half hour drive from Akureyri, the midwife told the driver to stop the vehicle by the farm’s driveway. That’s where the baby girl was born in the ambulance about half past midnight.

The baby girl is Elfa and Ásgeir’s first child together. Elfa has an older child from a previous relationship.

“Even though this was very unusual, it was a lot of fun, too,” Ásgeir states. He adds that they haven’t picked a name for the baby yet.

According to akureyri.net , it is an interesting coincidence that a midwife, Ása Marinósdóttir, used to live on the farm Kálfsskinn.

“Back in the day, I delivered between 20 and 30 babies at Kálfsskinn, because the mothers couldn’t make it any farther,” Ása tells akureyri.net .
