Freyja, the Icelandic Coast Guard’s newest ship, came to the rescue of the Greenlandic fishing vessel Masilik, when it ran aground 500 meters off the shore of Gerðistangi point on the Reykjanes peninsula, Southwest Iceland, last night, mbl.is reports. Gerðistangi is on the north side of the peninsula, east of Keflavík.

Freyja and the towboat Hamar were called out to assist the crew of 19 around 7 pm last night. According to the Icelandic Coast Guard, getting the vessel loose went well, and it is now in Hafnarfjörður harbor.

The crew of the Icelandic Coast Guard helicopter detected no oil in the ocean when it flew near the ship to check conditions. The weather was favorable for rescue efforts.

To ensure safety, 14 out of the ship’s 19 crew members were transported by boat to the village Vogar on Vatnsleysuströnd, before Masilik was taken into tow. Two crew members of Freyja got on board Masilik and stayed there while the ship was being towed to Hafnarfjörður.

There are no reports of injuries.
