Icelandic Minister of Health Svandís Svavarsdóttir has just announced tighter disease prevention measures in Iceland in response to a soaring number of new COVID-19 cases in recent days, mbl.is reports.

Starting at midnight, the use of facemasks will be mandatory anew in stores and at events where guests are seated.

Starting Wednesday, next week, the maximum number of people allowed to convene will be 500 instead of the current 2,000, and the operating hours of bars will be shortened by two hours. They must close their doors by 11 pm, and everyone must leave the premises by midnight.

The new restrictions will be in effect through December 8.
