New signs have appeared near the Reykjanesviti lighthouse, on the tip of the Reykjanes peninsula, instructing visitors in the area to pay for parking.

According to Mbl.is the signs were installed by the company Reykjanes Aurora which rents a small plot of land in the vicinity of the lighthouse.

The area is a short drive from the Blue Lagoon and Keflavik Airport and attracts a number of tourists who come to visit the lighthouse or to see the nearby cliffs of Valahnúkamöl. Many also stop to see the Gunnuhver hot springs named after a ghost which legend tells a crafty priest trapped in one of the springs.

All three tourist attractions have free parking but the new signs will have visitors think otherwise and trick them into paying 1.000 kr (approximately $8).

Mr. Guðlaugur Helgi Sigurðsson, manager of the environmental division of the municipality of Reykjanesbær, tells Mbl.is that the signs are placed outside the plot of land rented by Reykjavik Aurora: „This was done without our permission and without our blessing and the signs are very misleading.“

Whether or not the signs will be removed remains to be seen. ai@mbl.is
