Earthquake of Magnitude 5.0 This Morning

An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 hit the Reykjanes peninsula, Southwest Iceland, this morning at 7:43, mbl.is reports. Its source was 2.8 km south-southwest of Fagradalsfjall mountain. It was widely felt in Southwest Iceland, as well as all the way to Hvolsvöllur, South Iceland, and as far as Borgarfjörður, West Iceland.

It was followed by one of magnitude 4.1 at 8:48 am, according to vedur.is.

Nineteen earthquakes in excess of magnitude 3 have hit the area since midnight, and the source of all of them was south of Fagradalsfjall mountain.

One of magnitude 4.0 hit just before 1 am, another one of magnitude 3.9 hit at 3:52 am, and at 6:36 an earthquake of magnitude 3.8 hit the area.

Since midnight about 830 tremors have registered.

There has been constant seismic activity on the Reykjanes peninsula since February 24, when the largest earthquake – of magnitude 5.7 – hit the area. Scientists are closely monitoring the area for the possibility of an eruption.
