A total of 12,729 vaccinations have been completed in Iceland. Another 19,393 have been started, according to covid.is

“This is going really well,” Ragnheiður Ósk Erlendsdóttir, managing director of nursing for the Capital Area Health Clinics, tells Morgunblaðið. “We’ve seen a steady stream of people.”

The vaccine is administered at Laugardalshöll sports center. Yesterday, people born in 1940, 1941 and 1942 were called in to be vaccinated, as well as healthcare workers 65 and older, and a small group of healthcare workers aged 16-18.

The plan is for 7,000 people to be vaccinated in Iceland this week alone, some with the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, others with that from AstraZeneca.

“We’re trying to complete the vaccination of healthcare workers who work at institutions, before we focus on  those outside institutions,” Ragnheiður explains. “All healthcare workers at health clinics have been vaccinated, but some at Landspítali National University Hospital remain to be vaccinated. The plan is to complete those vaccinations next week.”

Vaccination of people with underlying diseases begins in April, according to the State’s vaccination schedule. It has not yet been specified what groups exactly will qualify, but Chief Epidemiologist Þórólfur Guðnason has stated that all those with immunodeficiency disorders will qualify, such as cancer patients.
