New Rules Take Effect Today

New disease prevention rules took effect in Iceland at midnight, mbl.is reports. They will be in effect through March 16 .

The maximum number of people allowed to gather has been raised from 20 to 50.

Fans may now attend sports events.

The maximum number of people allowed at cultural, religious and sports settings, as well as in stores has been raised to 200.

At cultural and sports events, attendees must be registered, seated, must face the same direction, wear face masks and keep a one-meter social distance from unrelated parties.No alcohol may be served at such events.

Bars and restaurants may admit new guests until 10 pm, and must close by 11 pm. (They have lately been required to close by 10 pm).

Swimming pools, fitness centers and ski resorts may now admit 75 percent of the number of people their license allows.

At ski resorts, the two-meter social distancing rule applies.

Today marks a milestone for secondary schools and universities, where the general limit of 150 people within confined areas applies. There, a one-meter social distancing rule replaces the two-meter rule, and face masks will only be required where it is not possible to guarantee the social distancing rule. This means that instruction can now take place on site instead of online. The new rules for schools and universities are good through April 30.
