A new COVID-19 color coding system from the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management was introduced at a press conference this morning, mbl.is reports. According to the new system, the number of people allowed to gather in Iceland will never exceed 100 during the pandemic. The two-meter social distancing rule will apply as well for all color codes.

At present, the highest alert code, red, is in effect. This code applies when only 5-20 people may gather at once. Face masks are required when using public transportation, in stores, when going from one disease prevention area to another, and for services that require proximity. The public is asked to spend time only with a limited number of people.

The next level below is orange. Between 20 and 50 people may gather at this stage, and face masks are required for public transportation and for services that require proximity. The public is asked to spend time with a limited number of people and to exercise caution around those who belong to sensitive groups.

The yellow code is in effect when 50-100 people may gather at once. Face masks are required for public transportation and for services that require proximity.

The new norm is represented with a gray color code. Here, 50-100 people may gather at once, and face masks are no longer required.

As stated above, the two-meter social distancing rule applies for all stages, even for the gray one.

An English version of the new system was not yet available on covid.is when this story was posted.
