Man Rescued from Fire in Akureyri Dies

The man rescued from a burning house in Akureyri the night before last has died, Morgunblaðið reports. He passed away yesterday afternoon at the intensive care unit of Landspítali National University Hospital. He was 67 years old.

Fire fighters discovered the man unconscious inside the two-story wooden house – one of Akureyri’s oldest houses - located at Hafnarstræti 37. He was the only person inside. After being admitted to Akureyri Hospital, he was transported by medical flight to Landspítali.

The source the fire is not yet known. Police investigated the scene of the fire Wednesday and yesterday. Among the items to be investigated further is an electrical equipment, according to a statement posted on the Facebook page of the North Iceland Police.

The investigation is in its initial stages, and no further information is being provided.
