At today’s press conference, Chief Epidemiologist Þórólfur Guðnason stated that for the third day in a row, no new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Iceland.

He announced that the next step toward easing restrictions will be taken May 25. At that time, fitness centers may be able to reopen with restrictions, and the maximum number of people allowed to gather will most likely be increased from 50 to 100 at that time. It still looks like swimming pools will be allowed to reopen with restrictions a week earlier, or May 18.

Þórólfur stressed the importance for people to keep washing hands frequently and respecting the 2-meter rule to prevent further transmissions. Sensitive groups, especially, need to maintain a 2-meter distance for quite some time, he stated.

As the number of people allowed to gather increases and it becomes tougher to enforce the 2-meter rule, businesses will be required to offer customers a chance to maintain a 2-meter distance. Sensitive groups will, therefore, be able to maintain that distance.

Þórólfur emphasized the importance of allowing a few weeks to pass between every step toward easing restrictions.
