A milestone was reached in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in Iceland yesterday when the only patient left in intensive care as a result of the disease was discharged from there, mbl.is reports. Director of Health Alma Möller congratulated the patient and relatives at a news conference yesterday. Nine people remain hospitalized with the disease in the country.

At the news conference, it was reported that three new cases of COVID-19 had been confirmed the previous day – two of them in Bolungarvík, the West Fjords, and one in the capital area. All three people diagnosed were already in quarantine. A total of 229 samples were analyzed at Landspítali National University Hospital and 459 at deCode Genetics. None of the deCode samples turned out positive.

According to covid.is, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases is now 1,795, and 1,636 people have recovered. Nearly 13 percent of the nation, or 47,065 people, have been tested for the virus. The number of active cases stands at 149. Ten people have died of the disease in Iceland.

Antibody tests have not yet been offered in Iceland, but they are being prepared, since they are believed to give a good idea of how large a proportion of a population has been infected with the novel coronavirus.
